Hey guys, Fairly quick one for you. The Taupo fishery is in full swing as of this week due to heavy rain, rising water levels and strong winds. We are due a weather bomb over the next few days and I will expect the conditions to stay very much the same. OMG, I have had the best fishing over the past couple of days that I have experienced in many years. Yesterday morning I made sure I was on the water very early and had the first lines through my favourite pool which with another local resulted in twenty fish landed.

Water levels on all rivers are currently very good expect for the TT which seems to be too high at the moment but will recede in the next few days if we don’t get too much more. The Tongariro will be perfect currently for both nymphers and wet liners with some nice colour still in it. The Hine which is the river I have fished hard the last few days is high and coloured with about 5 inches of visibility. The Waitahanui like always is fishable and with some westerly wind should be getting some fish also but not like the numbers of other rivers further south.

Glo bugs with plenty of split shot has been on the menu most mornings with very little action on the natural patterns. With coloured water and plenty of flow the fish are a little behind the eight ball and are getting caught quite easy. I have been been getting broken on a number of times and have gone to ten pound straight through on the main line-bit harsh but needed. The quality fish are all very good with the jacks being the better eating fish with deeper thicker sides and better colour. Some of the hens are very fat but a lot of the goodness has gone into the eggs as they are so ripe. This rain has certainly been needed and not a moment too soon, were in real good shape here currently.

With the weekend getting closer and our storm front approaching I tip the best fishing to be had on the Tongariro. There were some big groups of trout in there today which may have moved through to upper pools already but they will only be backed up with others especially if we get the weather we are promised. I am actually lucky enough to be guiding all weekend and pretty excited what those guys could be in for, will report back next week with outcomes.
