Another week is upon us and it looks like the hills are full of snow and some cold starts are in order. I love this time of year. Some anglers stay at home in the warm , some moan about cold fingers and some get out and enjoy some awesome winter sport. School holidays have started and the first clients for the week were a father son combo enjoying the river as they couldn’t get up the mountain.

Either of these guys had fly fished before and were actually expecting to go lure fishing until I picked them up at 7am and explained there was no way we were doing that. We fished the Hine for 5 hours and hooked 7 fish and landed 3 great looking fish. It was a pretty cold start which got colder as it often does as the sun rises and it was not long before the line was frozen to the guides. Ashley and his Dad Micheal are from Western Australia so the minus temperatures were on their minds.

We saw a few anglers out early but not half as many that were out on the weekend. The Hine has been amazing this season and if you can get your lines through your favourite pools you are sure to do well. The levels on the river seems to be up and down by the day but the fish seem to be ok with this and are pushing in over night stacking up in the deeper water. Some of the middle reaches seem to be a little harder to hit good patches of trout in so they must be moving fairly quick which is not a bad thing.  If you don’t know this river it pays to get a guide to give you a whirl wind tour through the best spots, doesn’t have to be me but anyone that can better your early run fishing.

The wind has been quite strong over the past couple of days so the Waitahanui should have a few fish gone through over the past 24 hrs which is just what is needed to top up the numbers in here. There are still some very good browns cruising in the upper sections though spawning seem to be very much on their minds. The Tongariro should have a few more fish in it this week and we should see fresh fish moving in most nights at the moment but I haven’t heard any good reports from down that way yet. I did see some browns which were caught on other websites from the Hydro pool so I suppose the fresh pushed the last of those to their favourite spawning trib.

Have a great week with school holidays
