Hi guys,

Hopefully this will be just a fairly quick update to let you know how things have been going locally lately. We currently have some awesome weather which should be with us to atleast the weekend which creates a perfect opportunity for anglers to squeeze in some summer fishing. The latest warm weather has fired the Cicada’s back up and trout have been hitting them really well, I was wrong!. All week I have fished exactly the same water and caught fish with all clients using a large single Black Turk’s Tarantular. I use this as my Cicada pattern on all waters that I fish and it’s very rare for a fish to refuse this offering when presented well.

Most rivers will be back to summer levels now and have all received fresh runs of either big silver browns or the odd silver rainbow. The brown trout in the Tongariro are going from strength to strength giving anglers some awesome sport and providing some exciting stalking opportunities. I fished with a very good angler on Tuesday and must have cast to over 25 good solid browns but only managed to hook ten rainbows and one very good brown which unfortunately managed to escape the camera lens. I was kinda gutted not to get him a good brown but at the end of the day they get big for a reason and they cant be caught everyday.

The very next day I was back out with a young enthusiastic lass on exactly the same water fishing for fish which I have been seeing for the last few days. The rainbows were again breaking the surface and after a few casting lessons we soon had these hungry bows chasing our Cicada down the river before pouncing on it.  The fishing was again continuous and solid on the Tongariro but was finished of really well when we finally fooled a brown to taking a large Stone Fly nymph, a great little fish and a very happy girl.  Once again brown trout being the big draw card to most anglers to the Taupo fishery currently.

I will be heading away to National Park in the morning for a backcountry trip with two really experienced Aussie boys so with a bit of luck may have some nice fish to report on next week, fingers crossed. Get out while the weather is nice eh!!
